Angelleli cause combined with priests and lay person

The diocesan process for the canonization of Argentinian JOC chaplain, Bishop Enrique Angelelli, who was assassinated during the 1970s military dictatorship, is already in the Vatican and has been combined with that of two priests and a lay person who were also killed in the same period.

The process was linked to the killings of two priests and a layman, victims of the same military regime
“The Church needs to verbalize many things of the dictatorship,” Fr Luis Liberti, an expert in the cause of beatification of the bishop of La Rioja between 1968 and 1976 told Vatican Insider.
Fr Liberti also now speaks of “Bishop Angelelli and his fellow martyrs.”

“In October 2016 the diocesan process was closed, which lasted for one year and eight months, since then the cause was brought to the Vatican,” Fr Liberti said.

“It is important to note that his cause is linked to that of three others killed before him, two priests (Gabriel Longueville, Carlos Murias) and a layman (Wenceslao Pedernera).
“Now this is a single cause.
“The 22 July of 1976 was the birthday of Angelelli. That same day they killed the priests, which was his (birthday) gift. On 26 July they killed the lay person and 4 August they killed the bishop,” Fr Liberti said.

Bishop Angelelli’s canonisation no longer a distant dream

CCI has welcomed the news that the canonization process of the late Bishop Enrique Angelelli is moving forward, coordinator MJ Ruben said today.

Bishop Angelelli, a pioneer chaplain of the JOC (YCW) and JUC (University YCS) in Argentina was assassinated on August 4, 1976 during the Dirty War for his involvement with social issues defending the rights of workers and farmers and standing up for his own priests.

With Pope Francis greenlighting the cause of canonization in early 2015, the Diocesan process in the Diocese of La Rioja, Argentina commenced on October 13, 2015. Now, Archbishop Marcelo Colombo has announced that the Diocese of La Rioja will complete the diocesan level process on September 15 and will send all materials to the Holy See for the next stage.

“We recall the words of Jorge Bergoglio (now Pope Francis) at the 30th anniversary mass for Bishop Angelelli in the Cathedral of La Rioja,” Ruben noted, “when he said that ‘Angelelli had stones thrown at him because he preached the Gospel, and he shed his blood for it’.”

“We also recall Cardijn’s words to Bishop Angelelli upon his appointment:

‘The Argentine JOC is losing one of its most ardent chaplains, but it is gaining a bishop who was… (one) of the pioneers of the JOC in Argentina and Latin America’.”

“CCI has been championing the cause of recognition by the Church for martyrs of Cardijn movements,” Ruben said, “including Bishop Angelelli’s close collaborator, Jose Serapio “Pepe” Palacio, a JOC leader in Argentina and in the JOC Internationale (IYCW) as well as for the Christian Workers Movement.

“In this context, we look forward to further developments in the case of Bishop Angelelli and other JOC leaders as well as that of Cardinal Joseph Cardijn himself.

“We hope that the Diocesan process in the case of Cardijn initiated in the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels in January 2014 as a result of the campaign by CCI will also be completed soon.

“We are doubly happy that the Church is recognizing ‘martyrs’ who fought for social justice. CCI seeks this recognition not for the sake of raising statues to our saints but to in order to motivate all future generations.

“Thanks to all those who were involved in this project and we look forward to Pope Francis taking up the cause at an even faster pace. Seeing Bishop Angelelli declared a Saint of the Holy Mother the Church is no longer a distant dream,” Ruben concluded.

La Rioja commemorates the martyrdom of Bishop Enrique Angelelli

The Province of La Rioja in Argentina has declared a new provincial public holiday in honour of Bishop Enrique Angelelli, the jocist bishop murdered by the military on 4 August 1976 at the height of Argentina’s Dirty War.

The Diocese of La Rioja also commemorated the 40th anniversary of Bishop Angelelli’s death with a memorial mass and conference.

“Forty years ago tears and anguish inhabited the desolate heart of the people whose shepherd had been stolen by the cruel blow by the arrogant power of state terrorism,” Bishop Marcelo Danilo Colombo, current bishop of La Rioja, said in his homily at the mass.

“Enrique Angelelli showed himself to us with realism and simplicity. ‘I do not have the vocation either of a victim, a martyr nor a hero, none of the three. I am simply the son of doña Celina and don Juan, who are my parents; and by the grace of God, I am a Christian. Yet I have this role as bishop that is not so easy.’ Bishop Angelelli said.
“Faced with the incomprehension of several sectors of the La Rioja community, who denied and attacked him, because of his ministry and the characteristics of his mission, like Paul, like the Prophets, he said
‘(…) It was not men who gave me the serious task of presiding this Diocesan Church but the Lord himself. The fidelity of this Church must be defended, even with blood, and the guarantee of the True Faith of Jesus Christ is the best service I can bring to my people, regardless of the limitations of my person and the power of the Spirit of the Lord.
‘And if the Bishop desires to be increasingly involved with the people of La Rioja so that they grow in Faith, Hope and Love, do not hinder him, help him to do so. If the poor find a father, a brother and a friend do not separate. If they do, God bless them (…)’ (Angelelli, Homily at Mass at the Sacred Heart College, 1972)
“Enrique Angelelli was a loving pastor. He loved when he gave his life as a young priest in Cañada in Cordoba, in his care for the young workers of the JOC and his brother priests at the Priestly Home.
“He deeply loved the Church and when he became a bishop he participated with great enthusiasm and valuable contributions in three sessions of the Second Vatican Council.
“He also loved the Church when he came to the Diocese of La Rioja as pastor and where he gave everything (to his ministry),” Bishop Colombo said.

A conference on 1-2 August 2016 also studied the life and work of Bishop Angelelli.

Speakers included:

  • Sister Angelica de los Santos on “Angelelli, father and pastor of the consecrated”
  • Fr Luis Liberti SVD and Fr Pablo Pastrone on “Angelelli, the martyr of Vatican II”.
Last week, Bishop Angelelli’s niece Marcella Recanatti also demanded that “those civilian leaders who asked for him to be killed” should also face trial. She said that it was a “historic error” that the only ones sentenced to jail time for the murder of Bishop Angelelli were members of the military.
